Buried Footprints ©

Stella
Fife, Scotland
2006

Barefoot in the sand they returned
These long ago men and women
Long boats just beyond the break
Back from seeking new pastures

Striding up they look each way
Listen and send dogs ahead
Paw prints testify this
Hunters and fishers come home

A camp where smoke rises
In the early dawn
Old men… women and children sleep
The fire watcher beats a drum

No calendars here
Moons yes and tides
The seekers are back
All shall have food

Left by ancients… footprints
Way beneath the coastal sand
Testimony of seagoing forefathers
Found by modern man
