Carrots ©

Graham Donachie
Victoria, Canada
2003

Laughing ‘midst a carrot field
she giggling ran to me

and lovely were her freckles
lost

in red locks o’ her irish streaming
sea.

wild was her
love,

so terrible
in that carrot field.

Dangerous, but sad

she

was mine but for
a golden heartbeat

a fleeting
wonderful dream

was she.
