Forgotten Dates ©

by H Marshall
Scotland
2005

It's not that I do it on purpose
it's not that I don't really care
although I try hard to remember
forgetting dates is my despair

I never have problems with Christmas,
Guy Fawkes, Hogmanay, or New Year,
I always remember them clearly--
it's those in the rest of the year

I'm thinking of birthdays and weddings
of valentines, mothers and dads
although I may plan for the future
forgetting them makes me look bad

One year I forgot my own birthday
my face turned a bright scarlet red
when the postman delivered my cards--
I cannot repeat what was said

Please help me to cure my affliction
eradicate all of this strife
assure me that I can get better
bring peace to my tormented life
