Friendship Among Soldiers ©
by H Marshall
Scotland
I joined the Army
they gave me a gun
for killing the enemy
not for fun.
They trained me to shoot
and sent me to war
to fire my gun
under desert star.
I looked through the sights
and saw a friend
I brought his young life
to a bloody end.
The war raged on
through sand and rock
friends on both sides
suffered from shock.
Peace came at last
a war always ends
we count the dead
and bury our friends.
A simple cross
marks their unknown grave
I sob great tears
for those friends so brave.
My children ask
"Dad, is it true,
that you killed a friend
you never knew?"
