My Granny's New Year ©

In a teetotal house
an exception was made
for the new year

Bought at the last minute
Two bottles
From the grocer on the corner

I went with her
Wearing pixie hood
with scarf crossed over
And pinned at the back

She had cleaned for two days
baked all afternoon
made cordial which burned my throat

I can still feel the chill wind
Sense the dark evening
And tonight she feels close by

She made an exception
So others could bring good luck
they could toast our health
at a fireside of good cheer
