Stella
Fife, Scotland
2005

The anticipation of work days
Waiting round the corner
Of the coming week
Linger and deplete my energy

This is the opposite of the other waiting
Counting down days on the calendar
Until summer freedom smiles
And school is out

Six weeks seemed endless then
Now as if days had grown wings
Or the clock is haywire
Time is flying past

I hear in passing
Mothers’ comments and sighs
“not before time” and “thank goodness”
I take a deep breath and say nothing
