Poppies Grow in Turmoil ©

Stella
Fife, Scotland
2004

Poppies grow where man's hand
And mind have caused turmoil
War and peace
Claim for country or self

Beneath the crosses
Yes and pepper pot seeds
Symbolic of blood
In the mud beside the boys

Land is eaten up by concrete jaws
While cities sleep
Dormitory towns grown up
And the city sleeps when the shops shut

Poppies grow in plots
Named after farms and woods
While the city sleeps bereft
Of it's sons and daughters
