Scotland the Brave ©

May Cuthbert
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
1999

'Tis the hills I seek
powerful, rolling to deep waters below,
hills glowing shades of green
heather sprouts between bracken
prickly thistles standing tall
purple heads blowing in the wind

'Tis the people I seek
that stir my heart to hope
Dancers in kilts red blues and greens
swirling jigs and reels
pipes in tune - tapping feet
marching bands pipes slow in lament
glorious to the end

'Tis Scotland I seek
Lochs wide, deep, secretive, stormy and silent
changing with winds
Scotland steeped in history, battles, blood and tears
strong to stand alone
soil of birth
My own Scotland the brave
