The Mourning Discovery ©

Bryon D. Howell
Connecticut, USA
2007

My cat and I became a sort of team,
without my realizing what would be.
A buddy to all creatures once my theme -
I soon became the backyard enemy.
I fed the dog and cat upon my wake -
threw bread outside to all the lovely birds.
The cat went out for good old nature's sake.
My coffee brewed, I sat to write some words.
My dog stared up at me with weary eyes -
a look which said, "You humans have no clue."
I couldn't figure out his frantic sighs -
completely ignorant of what cats do.
Two of those birds were killed by my own cat.
she left them on the "Welcome All Friends" mat.
