The Wizard of Rulers ©

Sharon Lindeman
New York, USA
2006

The wizard of rulers
sings out softly,
one note
piercing
his side,
Awakening ten thousand soldiers,
awakening ten thousand to ride,
into the black belly
of the night.

Swiftly they ride
as darkness,
like black earth
swallowing the seed,
envelopes earth
in its magic,
Swiftly,
swiftly
they ride.

To the East of Uranus,
to the edge of the sea,
pale, Venus
lights shadows,
the soldiers can see,
Illuminating Erebus
on their way
to the sea.

The queen alone
in her garden,
the swan evaporates
into air,
far off,
alone
in the distance,
the white horse
reappears.
