Why Are Poppies Red? ©

H Marshall
Scotland

hear the thunder
of poppies trembling in a field,
see their raging colours explode
in your eyes;
for all time they will roar
a constant red hue
and cry of war
in your ears;
and the blood of our dead
will weep from warriors' wounds
to load the soil
with spent life,
for their shoots
and scarlet epaulettes
