Why Are Poppies Red? ©

H Marshall
Scotland

hear the thunder
of poppies in a field,
feel their raging colours explode
in your eyes,
for all time they will roar
a constant red hue
and cry of war
in your ears,
and the blood of our dead
will weep from warriors' wounds
to ration the soil
with loaded ammunition
for their shoots
and scarlet epaulettes
