Women With Desk ©

Barbara Knowlton
Morgantown, WV, USA
2007

They sit perched behind a window
Peering through glass and looking for excuses
To work, to socialize, to bide time
They answer phones with heavy sighs
Then, to the bathroom
To contemplate, to dream,
Then, they return to their working nest
Where anxiety awaits in a pen
And crazy old women with bad breath complain
About their ailments.
They flip through their schedules
They click on the mouse
Searching for something to connect with
When they find it they are relieved
Relieved to know that the transaction is soon complete
Then they look at the clock above their desk

Hanging perfectly
Without complaint

And notice that only 2 minutes have passed.
