Goodbye to Sonsie Neb ©

(Sonsie Neb - amongst other things - is a massive cliff feature on the north side of the Clanyard Bay, which lies at the south end of the North Channel on the Scottish side. It was a popular fishing spot 40 years ago. The fair lady referred to (like Dylan) has a similar shaped "snoot" - on a slightly smaller scale.)

Jim Hogg
Stranraer, Scotland
2005

When I said goodbye to Sonsie Neb, I said goodbye to you
It wasn't meant to be that way, but some things we can't choose
I took my stuff, turned my back, and left the cliffs behind
And the most important things of all were the last things on my mind

Though the Lennans lean towards the land they look straight out to sea
A million years they've stood that way, and that's how it's meant to be
While I lean upon the things I love and cast my eyes around
Looking for something I might want just to throw it on the ground

Chorus:
So take me to the Creechan shore or the rock just round the Snib
To watch the ebb race past the Dyke and let the Rana be my crib
Talk to me of a worthwhile life with nowhere left to hide
And let me gaze on your dark eyes to calm these storms inside

Though jagged rocks and breaking seas wait to set me free
The raging tides below the light are some kind of home to me
There's nothing there that's really mine, not even what I breathe
But I need some place to call home and it's there that this road leads

I've been everywhere across this land and dazzled by its charms
Lochnagar and Glen Lyon, but found nowhere like your arms
I've been lost for years in words and song, in fiction and in fact
With my eyes upon the road ahead I was lost in looking back

Chorus:
So take me to the Creechan shore or the rock just round the Snib
Watch the ebb race past the Dyke and let the Rana be my crib
Talk to me of a worthwhile life with nowhere left to hide
And let me gaze on your dark eyes to calm these storms inside

I've felt the chill of winters' nights, and the warmth of loving hearts
Stood beside the river wide and been revived by Nature's arts
But beyond the waves and the beating wings of the raven and the gull
Between the tides that ebb and flow stands the headland of the Mull

I could stay away from all I miss to keep love's lessons clear
But there comes a time to say enough and I think that time is near
Sonsie Neb you're a siren song and there's the spell of Laggant'och
And in your dark eyes a welcome I once thought too little of

Chorus:
So take me to the Creechan shore or the rock just round the Snib
Watch the ebb race past the Dyke and let the Rana be my crib
Talk to me of a worthwhile life with nowhere left to hide
And let me gaze on your dark eyes to calm these storms inside

Now it's hard enough to see the truth when it's right before your eyes
You think that love is gone at last and too late you realise
From time to time along the way I've tried to put things right
I haven't done too well so far, but one day I just might

Well the war of rock and ocean will go on when we're long gone
Time has had the best of us and it just keeps on and on
But I see beauty in your age, in the lines and in the grey
And to you and Sonsie Neb, I'll be heading home some day
