I Waited On ©

Jim Hogg
Stranraer, Scotland
2005

It was getting late and the wind was on the rise
Stars were breaking thru' a mist of tender lies
All that we'd become was getting in the way
All that mattered most to us became too hard to say

And you were standing there, so lonely in your doubt
I had lost my way and the only road led out
The leaves had left the trees and all their promise for decay
Not knowing what to hold love soon gets swept away

Chorus:
I waited thru' the sunshine and I waited thru' the frost
Not knowing what to hold, not knowing what was lost
Not knowing love was here, not knowing it was gone
I said that I would wait for love and so I waited on

We'd images of all we thought that we would need
To be standing tall, thinking every road would lead
Into a promised land where none of us could fall
How strange it all breaks down when love decides to call

I knew you in our spring when every dream was new
So young we fell so far through every touch so true
Hand in hand we strolled down the scented paths of love
Strong enough to break our hearts but not quite strong enough

Chorus:
I said that I would wait for love and so I waited on
Not knowing it was here, not knowing love was gone
I waited through the sunshine and I waited thru' the frost
Not knowing what to hold, not knowing what was lost

Snow fell soft and slow when we last had time to share
To talk of all we'd lost to dreams that took us where?
Through sunshine and thru' frost the ghosts of love still stood
As lost as falling leaves in some deserted wood

It's all so long ago and someday I might forget
All those things we said, or that we'd ever met
And though the music's silent now the dancing still goes on
As if we'd never parted love as if you'd never gone
