Maybe Days ©

I could see your eyes across her shoulder looking into mine
Waves of black cascading down around that stream of wine
We sipped for months from that endless flow, but never strayed to touch
And turned our backs not knowing then we'd left behind so much
The world came round and offered us so many roads to choose
That flood of choices opened up so many ways to lose
For we were young and blinded by the scope that lay in wait
And deaf to all alarms we took to limousines and lace
Upon that stage of dreams we lived according to the plan
I thought that I was carrying the torch for Everyman
While you resolved to rescue the struggling and the frail
Two separate craft with growing crews fully under sail
Through life's storms we dodged until the good years had slipped past
Until the future lost its glow and we turned around at last
To see the walls begin to fall and the tide come rushing in
To sweep you back from nowhere to begin the flow again
Now we stand so far apart, but we've never been so close
Though life and love have left their scars and we share this thing with ghosts
Thinking of some maybe days when we won't have to cheat
And we'll sink a glass or two of love so blind and bittersweet
Chorus:
Now some may say the past is gone, but we know that's not true
And though it's late to take a chance you said, "I'll risk it all for you."
So let's resolve to rescue what we can from what we were
And hope the stream that brought us here takes us who knows where
