The Piper Must Be Paid ©

Gordon Fjaelberg
Bridgend, Wales
1998

I was good enough to begin with,
It was fine when things went well,
Now you're living life at an angle
And I'm getting there as well.
You say you don't want charity,
That's a choice which you have made,
But your thoughts might need revising
When the piper must be paid.

You live your life
In solitude,
You live your life
Restrained;
You don't need friends
That comfort you,
And yet you still
Complained.
Those big steps
Into darkness
All suggest you're
Not afraid,
But the piper
Will come calling,
And the piper
Must be paid.

You can't have a cake
And also keep it,
You can't always have
Things your own way.
Can it simply be just
Your unknown ambition
Helps get you through
Each long, sad day?
You float around
In blinkered seclusion
Not knowing where
Or when you are;
You'll be a lonely
Woman, mourning
Wasted chances
To be a star.

You live your life
In solitude,
You live your life
Restrained;
You don't need friends
That comfort you,
And yet you still
Complained.
Those big steps
Into darkness
All suggest you're
Not afraid,
But the piper
Will come calling,
And the piper
Must be paid.

Running through emotional jungles,
Casual hopes and deep regret.
You're heading for disaster, lady,
But you haven't got there yet.
You pick up and dust down lovers,
Much like trying on a coat;
That's a quick road into a spiral
And it does not get my vote.

You live your life
In solitude,
You live your life
Restrained;
You don't need friends
That comfort you,
And yet you still
Complained.
Those big steps
Into darkness
All suggest you're
Not afraid,
But the piper
Will come calling,
And the piper
Must be paid.

If you just took off the blinkers,
Had a long, hard look around,
You'd see a bigger, brighter world,
Than the one in which you're drowned.
You needn't seek out favours
Or a love that's ready made
When the piper plays to warn you
That he's waiting to be paid.

You live your life
In solitude,
You live your life
Restrained;
You don't need friends
That comfort you,
And yet you still
Complained.
Taking big steps
Into darkness
All suggest you're
Not afraid,
But the piper
Will come calling,
And the piper
Must be paid.
